Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ‘Snowden’ Pulled From Christmas Release

Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s “Snowden” is being pulled from its planned Christmas release date and out of the 2015 awards season race.

Open Road, which had no comment, will instead open the Oliver Stone-directed biopic sometime in 2016.

Even with the “Snowden” move, Christmas Day will have four wide releases with Will Smith’s “Concussion” from Sony, Will Ferrell-Mark Wahlberg comedy “Daddy’s Home” from Paramount, Fox’s Jennifer Lawrence dramedy “Joy” and Warner Bros.’s “Point Break.” Christmas will also see limited releases of The Weinstein Co.’s Quentin Tarantino Western “The Hateful Eight” and Leonardo DiCaprio’s “The Revenant” from Fox.

Shailene Woodley, Melissa Leo, Zachary Quinto, Tom Wilkinson and Timothy Olyphant also star in the Snowden pic.

Snowden was charged in 2013 by the U.S. Department of Justice with two counts of violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property, and his passport was revoked a week later by the U.S. Department of State. He was granted temporary asylum by Russia last year.

Moritz Borman is producing with Eric Kopeloff and Philip Schulz-Deyle. Stone is directing from a script he co-wrote with Kieran Fitzgerald, based on Luke Harding’s book “The Snowden Files: The Inside Story of the World’s Most Wanted Man” and “Time of the Octopus,” written by Snowden’s Russian lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena.

The news about the release date was first reported by The Hollywood Reporter.
