Telluride: Dogwoof to Distribute Islamic State Documentary ‘Only The Dead’

“Only The Dead,” Michael Ware and Bill Guttentag’s documentary about the origins of terror group Islamic State, will be distributed in international territories by U.K. firm Dogwoof.

The film plays this week in Telluride and will next be presented to distributors at the Toronto film festival and the American Film Market. Dogwoof, a documentary specialist, has rights outside North America, Australia and New Zealand.

“Only the Dead” is the story of Australian photo journalist, Ware, who was transplanted into the Middle East by the reverberations of 9/11, butts into history in the making in the deepest recesses of the Iraq war.

Ware was sent on a three week assignment in Baghdad for Time magazine, which eventually stretched to eight years. On his return home he reviewed his video footage and with two-time Oscar-winning documentary maker Guttentag pieced together the movie.

“This is the most terrifying, first-hand account of the early foundations of Islamic State,” said Vesna Cudic, Dogwoof’s head of TV sales and acquisitions.

The film is a Penance Films and Wolfhound Pictures Production, funded by Screen Australia in association with Screen Queensland and Foxtel. It won prizes at the Sydney film festival in June, where it premiered. Transmission Films will handle the Australian theatrical release at the end of the year.

    Film Review: 'Shazam!'

In “Shazam!,” Zachary Levi brings off something so winning it’s irresistible. He plays a square-jawed, rippling-muscled man of might, with a cheesy Day-Glo lighting bolt affixed to his chest, who projects an insanely wholesome and old-fashioned idea of what a superhero can be. But he’s also playing a breathless teenage kid on the inside, and [...]

    Film Review: 'The Dirt'

A long time ago, the words sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll carried a hint of danger. The lifestyle did, too, but I’m talking about the phrase. It used to sound cool (back around the time the word “cool” sounded cool). But sex, drugs, and rock ‘n’ roll has long since passed into the realm [...]
