Taka Ichise’s Oz Files for Bankruptcy

TOKYO — Takashige (‘Taka’) Ichise, the producer of the seminal J-Horror hits “Ring” (1998) and “Dark Water” (2002), as well as Hollywood remakes of Japanese shockers, has put his production company Oz into liquidation.

According to Japanese media sources, Oz started formal bankruptcy proceedings in Tokyo District Court on Sept. 9.

Founded by Ichise in 1989, the company recorded sales of $16 million for the fiscal year ending in June 2007, but in recent years, with the fading of the J-Horror boom, has found hits hard to come by.

In 2004 Ichise and his partners scored a number one hit at the US box office with “The Grudge,” a remake of the 2002 Takashi Shimizu horror “Juon: The Grudge,” which Ichise also produced. He was also a producer on the less-successful follow-ups “The Grudge 2” (2006) and “The Grudge 3” (2009).
