New York-based producer and distributor Submarine has boarded “A Life In Polka Dots,” a now in-production biographical documentary about Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama whose speciality is polka dots.

Submarine will co-finance and co-sell the movie with the U.K.’s Dogwoof.

It is being written, directed and produced by Heather Lenz, with Karen Johnson and Submarine’s David Koh and Dan Braun also as producers. The film will be completed by the fourth quarter of the year.

A contemporary of Andy Warhol, Kusama struggled with sexism and racism in her early career, and spent 30 years in a Tokyo mental institution. She returned to fame with exhibitions that were shown at the Venice Biennale and London’s Tate Modern. And in 2012 Louis Vuitton launched a clothing line made in collaboration with Kusama.

Submarine has credits including “Citizenfour,” Academy nominated “Finding Vivian Maier,” Sundance Grand Jury Prize Winner “The Wolfpack,” “Dior & I,” and “Blackfish.”
