SINGAPORE – Singapore-based production house mm2 Entertainment revealed multiple projects at the ongoing Asia TV Forum & Market.

In association with local superstar Jack Neo’s JTeam productions, the company will co-produce the fourth instalment of the popular “Ah Boys To Men” franchise.

The movies look at different disciplines within Singapore’s National Service, a compulsory two-year full time military service for citizens and permanent residents. Neo said that his team hasn’t decided which discipline the fourth film would tackle and that permits take time because of the checks involved due to the franchise’s military theme.

Neo said that the film would cast newcomers. “It is good to get more new faces. It is good for the industry,” he said.

The plan is to release the film in 2017, timed to coincide with the National Service’s 50th anniversary.

Also due in 2017 is another JTeam-mm2 collaboration set for the Chinese New Year holiday frame. “That Girl,” the Neo directed segment of “7 Letters,” the anthology film by seven Singaporean directors that was made to commemorate the country’s 50th anniversary, proved to be popular. Neo is now planning an extension of that story and expand it to feature length. It will be a love story, Neo said, “Everybody loves love stories these days.” Neo hasn’t attempted the genre before as, “I am not a romantic man.”

At the same event mm2 CEO Melvin Ang announced an initiative where three Singaporean directors would be funded to make three features on location in Hong Kong within the next two to three years. The idea is for them to gain experience of the best practices in the Hong Kong film industry, Ang said. “It is early days. We don’t have a commercial model or scripts yet,” Ang said.

Ang also announced the continuation of Movie Makers 2015, a short film competition organised with Fox International Channels and mm2 Entertainment to develop and groom new talents in the Singapore film industry. 2015 winners received cash prizes and Canon cameras and one of the top three will get an opportunity to direct a feature for mm2. The 2016 edition will take place in Singapore and another as yet undecided Asian city.
