TOKYO — “Yo-Kai Watch the Movie 2: King Enma and the 5 Stories, Nyan!,” the second feature animation based on a popular role playing game, won its second weekend at the Japanese box office.
For the Dec. 26-27 frame the film recorded $4.1 million on 450,000 admissions, to drive its cumulative total to $19 million on 2.15 million admissions.
Again in the number two spot was “Star Wars: The Force Awakens,” with $5.8 million on 440,000 admissions. In Japanese box office rankings, admissions trump earnings, so “Star Wars” had to bow, at least locally, to the better-attended “Yo-Kai Watch.”
The only new entrant to the top ten, at number six, was “Chibi Maruko-chan: Italia Kara Kita Shonen” (literally: The Boy Who Came from Italy), a feature animation commemorating the 25th anniversary of a TV cartoon show about the adventures of a Bart-Simpson-like girl and her family.
