Japan Box Office: ‘Raintree’ Wins Weekend, ‘Mockingjay — Part 2’ Opens in Ninth

TOKYO – “Raintree Country” (Raintree no Kuni) won the three-day holiday weekend, Nov. 21-23, at the Japanese box office.

Starring Yuta Tamamori of the boy band “Kis-My-Ft2,” the romantic drama about a couple who bond online over the same novel, including its disturbing ending, earned $1.0 million on 91,700 admissions from 190 screens in its opening frame. With Tamamori fans snapping up tickets, the film is expected to approach the $10 million mark.

Opening at number two (by ticket sales) was “Girls und Panzer – The Movie,” an animation based on a popular TV show set in an alternative universe where teenage girls fight each other with military tanks as an intramural sport. The film took $1.05 million on 84,800 admissions. Targeting fans of the TV show and original video animation (OVA), the film earned more per ticket than “Raintree,” but had fewer admissions. Both films are distributed by Showgate.

Bowing in the third-place slot was “The Little Prince,” a French feature animation distributed in Japan by Warner. In its first two days it earned $874,000 from 82,900 admissions, not strong numbers given its 569 screens.

The other non-Japanese film opening in the box office top ten was “The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 2” at number nine. With Kadokawa distributing, the film recorded $434,000 on 38,400 admissions from 252 screens.
