“Jalal’s Story,” by first-time director Abu Shahed Emon, is the Bangladesh contender in the foreign language category at the 88th Academy Awards.

The film (aka “Jalal’er Golpo”) is the tale of an orphan found by a river, adopted and abandoned by a series of father figures and who eventually becomes a gangster.

The Boutique Cinema imprint of prolific Bangladesh studio Impress Telefilm produced the film.

“Jalal’s Story” won an Asian Cinema Fund grant at the Busan International Film Festival, which enabled the film’s completion. It played at the festival’s New Currents strand in 2014.

Elsewhere, the film has played at the International Film Festival of India, Goa, the Jaipur International Film Festival, India, where it won best debut for Emon, and been selected for the Montreal World Film Festival and the Fajr International Film Festival, Iran.

At the Avanca International Film Festival, Portugal, “Jalal’er Golpo” won best film and best actor for Mosharraf Karim.
