Grosses for all but one of the top films took huge tumbles after the end of the Chinese New Year holidays.
The exception was “Big Hero 6,” which emerged on top for the March 2-8 period with a seven-day score of $29.9 million. That was more than double its opening two-day frame. After nine days the animation has accumulated a $43.5 million total, according to local box office tracking service Entgroup.
Running it close over the latest weekend was the Wachowski siblings’ “Jupiter Ascending,” which released on Friday and amassed $23.1 million, a figure almost identical to its opening weekend score in North America.“The Man From Macau II” (aka “From Vegas to Macau II”) took second place over the March 2-8 period with a seven- day score of $27.4 million. While that represented a 61% drop, compared with the previous week, the Hong Kong, gambling, comedy sequel has emerged as the clear winner among the pack of Chinese New Year-released films. After 18 days it has amassed a cume of $140 million.
“Wolf Totem,” which started relatively slowly on launch, took $20.7 million over the week, a drop of 56% as it slipped from second to fourth spot. Nevertheless that lifts the 18-day cumulative score for the Jean-Jacques Annaud-directed socio-political animal tale to $99.7 million after 18 days.
In fifth place for the week was Jackie Chan, John Cusack and Adrien Brody-starring “Dragon Blade.” It took a 71% tumble, scoring $13.1 million. That propelled its 18-day cumulative total to $113 million.
Newcomer “Paddington” opened in sixth place with $7.48 million in four days.
Another Chinese New Year release, Chinese-made fantasy “Zhong Kui: Snow Girl And The Dark Crystal” dropped 80% in its third frame to a record $5.42 million on the week. That gave it a cume of $63.6 million after 18 days.
Local titles “The Right Mistake” and “Beijing, New York” claimed eighth and ninth places in the chart. “Mistake” earned $3.65 million in four days, while “Beijing, New York” earned $1.93 million.
Bringing up tenth place on the week was “Triumph in the Skies.” The Hong Kong-made comedy drama took $1.63 million, a week-on-week drop of 84%, edging its 18-day cume to $24.6 million.
