Bucheon Festival Shrugs Off MERS Threat, Unveils 200 Genre Film Lineup

SEOUL — The 19th edition of the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, Asia’s largest genre film festival, will go ahead despite the recent outbreak of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome.

The festival (July 16-26) will open with French director Antoine Bardou-Jacquet’s “Moonwalkers.” Closing the festival is the world premiere of local director Kim Hui’s horror title “The Chosen: Forbidden Cave.”

“We will not cancel the festival, though the form and scale might be affected depending on the instruction that the national disaster management headquarters announces on July 24,” said BiFan director Kim Young-bin

He styled the upcoming edition as a “premium showcase for genre films.” The line-up spans 235 films from 45 countries.

The festival will dedicate focus sections to Japanese director Sono Sion, Korean indie films, Mexican genre cinema and classic sci-fi films. A retrospective section will be dedicated to Hong Kong actor Simon Yam.

Other program highlights include local filmmaker Han Jun-hee’s Cannes title “Coin Locker Girl,” Indian period crime drama “Bombay Velvet” by Anurag Kashyap, and Miyazawa Rie-starring “Pale Moon” by Japan’s Yoshida Daihachi.

BiFan’s four-day industry sidebar Network of Asian Fantastic Films will highlight five Chinese genre films. NAFF is also newly launching “Nordic Genre Invasion,” a platform for Nordic genre film producers focusing on assistance on film distribution and marketing.
