Styx Frontman Tommy Shaw Lists Modern Retreat Above L.A.’s Beachwood Canyon

SELLERS: Tommy and Jeanne Shaw
LOCATION: Los Angeles, Calif.
PRICE: $1.95 million
SIZE: 2,207 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: Styx frontman and budding bluegrass musician Tommy Shaw and his third wife, Jeanne, have put a freshly rehabbed Los Angeles residence up for sale with an asking price of $1.95 million. Property records show the low-slung, single-story 1960s contemporary securely set behind a frosted glass gate in the upper Beachwood Canyon area was purchased by the rock ‘n’ roll couple in early 2011 for $1.09 million and subsequently given a thorough makeover with 10-foot ceilings and polished concrete floors.

A glass door opens directly into the main living space fitted and finished with ceiling-height glass sliders that open to the backyard, a wall-mounted if somewhat awkwardly located flatscreen television and, opposite the slightly raised chipped glass fireplace — booze lovers take note, a wet bar with under-counter storage and open shelving. The adjoining dining alcove with canyon, mountain and over-the-the-tree tops sky vistas connects through to a compact but efficiently organized kitchen with floating, dark chocolate brown cabinetry and thick slabs of bright white solid surface countertops. A notably roomy if unusually shaped laundry room completes the service wing. All three bedrooms have attached private bathrooms, and one of the guest bedrooms opens through glass sliders to the swimming pool, as does the master bedroom, which also benefits from a fireplace, fitted walk-in closet with built-in makeup vanity and a garden-view bathroom with separate soaking tub and windowed shower stall.

A narrow strip of stone-tiled terracing girdles the small and vaguely boomerang-shaped swimming pool. The tiles give way to a graveled patch and an oversized deck cantilevered over the hillside where it takes advantage of a postcard perfect view back over the house’s flat rooftop to the iconic Hollywood Sign.

The Shaws previously owned a much more grand gated compound less than half a mile away and directly underneath the Hollywood Sign that they had worked over a few years ago by reality television’s sassiest house flipper-turned-paint mogul Jeff Lewis. The Shaws sold the property in August 2013 for $5.3 million to Swedish DJ and music producer Eric Prydz and at the same time coughed up $2.35 million for a nearly 11,000-square-foot mansion on four-ish bucolic acres outside Nashville, Tenn., that was once owned by late disco dynamo Donna Summer.
