Sia Makes Off-Market Purchase of Toluca Lake Estate

BUYERS: Sia Furler and Erik Anders Lang
LOCATION: Toluca Lake, CA
PRICE: $5,150,000
SIZE: 4,549 square feet, 3 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, plus guesthouse

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: So swears relentless real estate yenta Yolanda Yakketyyak, it was Australian-born singer/songwriter Sia and her documentary filmmaker husband, Erik Anders Lang, who via corporate entity secretly splashed out $5.15 million for a 1.36-acre estate tucked into what is arguably the most exclusive and more than likely most heavily secured cranny of Los Angeles’s affluent and celeb-filled Toluca Lake community. The gated spread, available on the open market in 2014 but sold last month in what appears to have been an off-market deal, includes a 1940s main house with three bedrooms and three bathrooms in 4,549-square-feet, according to the L.A. County Tax Records, plus an about equally sized guesthouse previously used as a recording studio. Steel-framed French doors open the main residence and guesthouse to the estate’s extensive grounds that offer generous flagstone terraces, broad lawns, mature trees and gardens, and, alongside the swimming pool, a built-in grilling station next to an outdoor fireplace. Some of the fame eschewing pop star’s new and nearest neighbors include: 2016 Golden Globe nominee Steve Carell (“The Big Short”), who resides in a custom-built shingle-sided East Coast-style mansion on an estate once owned by Jonathan Winters; Kim Porter, mother to three of Sean “Puff Daddy” Combs’ five children; and oil heiress Ariadne Getty, who 2.5 years ago sold her multi-residence Hollywood Hills compound to Katy Perry and snatched up the former Miley Cyrus family homestead in Toluca Lake earlier this year for exactly six million clams.

The artfully idiosyncratic five-time Grammy nominee, who has written hit ditties for the likes of Madonna, Rihanna and Flo Rida and over the last few years has obscured her own face with a giant wig when she performs her own music live, continues to own a 1930s cottage in L.A.’s ever more hipster-fied Echo Park ‘hood that was scooped up in August 2012 for $890,000. She also maintains a characteristically quirky residence in Palm Springs that was originally built as a small apartment complex but converted to a single-family compound prior to her acquisition in December 2013 for $1.646 million. In June of this year (2015), Sia and Lang shelled out $4.7 million —$400,000 more than the asking price — for a terrifically eccentric Mediterranean Revival-style residence in Los Feliz but, alas, the couple quickly had a real estate change of heart or, perhaps, simply caught a classic case of The Celebrity Real Estate Fickle, and flipped the property back on the market just three months later with an asking price of $4.995 million. As of today, the historic, A.F. Leicht-designed house is in escrow to be sold to an unknown buyer at an unknown price.
