Shaun White Lands Los Angeles Contemporary (EXCLUSIVE)

BUYER: Shaun White
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
PRICE: $6,400,000
SIZE: 4,500 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: An eye-catching, brand-spanking new contemporary residence near the end of a quiet cul-de-sac on a flat city-view parcel above Los Angeles’s heavily celebrified Outpost Estates nabe was recently purchased via trust, per property records, and inexhaustible real estate yenta Yolanda Yakketyyak says she’ll swear on the street value of solid gold snowboard the new owner is none other than snowboard superstar and property gossip column staple Shaun White. The approximately 4,500-square-foot house, a boxy but still sleek and architecturally masculine interplay of poured concrete, horizontally applied wood siding, and dramatic expanses of glass, features five bedrooms, 5.5 bathrooms, and a glass-doored side-facing two-car garage.

A brief entrance hall with glass-railed switch back staircase opens immediately and directly into an expansive, combination living/dining/kitchen space that spans the full width of the house with entire walls of floor to-ceiling glass that provide an open lights view. The house was built with, according to listing details, “only the highest end finishes” and listing photographs show a rather unusual and no doubt expensive, zigzagging lighting system streaks pick-up-sticks-like across the ceiling throughout the living/dining/kitchen space and, to be honest, butter beans, grates uncomfortably on this property gossip’s admittedly less flashy decorative proclivities. Also of note is the prominently placed solid glass wine storage cabinet in the main living area, a nowadays de rigueur feature in multi-million dollar spec-built contemporaries in Los Angeles that makes it simple for the homeowner to impress anyone and everyone with their booze and wine collection.

A small and — let’s be honest — sort of useless lounge area with tiny terrace along with a trio of en suite guest and family bedrooms on the upper floor are joined by a master suite that is inexplicably and inelegantly entered through the bathroom that is also inexplicably and inelegantly completely open to the bedroom space. Fortunately, we note, the toilet at least is enclosed in a private cubicle. This essentially privacy-free bathroom scenario didn’t bother Mister White but for $6.4 million this property gossip — who is not and never will be in the market for a $6.4 million spec-built contemporary in the Hollywood Hills — would absolutely not want to lay in bed and look directly into the bathroom, arguably the most inner of a home’s inner sanctums where any number of unsightly ablutions take place on a daily basis. In the plus column, however, there’s a spacious, fitted walk-in closet and a private, city-view terrace. A broad deck for al fresco dining and lounging extends off the back of the house and it’s a few steps down to an unexpectedly expansive and desirably flat lawn and a swimming pool with integrated circular spa set at a slight elevation to take advantage of the view.

The two-time gold medalist, endorsement powerhouse, up-and-coming festival entrepreneur, and musician — he plays the guitar in the electronic rock band Bad Things — is certainly no stranger to the property gossip columns. Just this month the 29-year-old half pipe virtuoso, who has publicly said he hopes to compete in his fourth consecutive Olympics at the 2018 games in South Korea, sold a 2,036-square-foot, fully remodeled 1960s contemporary above the Sunset Strip for $2.3 million to an L.A.-based interior designer. Our research shows young Mister White’s other residential holdings currently include a fairly ordinary tract house in a gated development in Carlsbad, California; a recently renovated beachfront residence in Encinitas, California, that he bought in 2012 for $3.85 million; a two-bedroom and three-bathroom condo in Park City, Utah, that was listed for lease earlier this year at $2,000 per month; and — his most expensive known purchase to date — a bluff-top compound that overlooks Malibu’s Point Dume that he scooped up in October 2013 for $8.94 million.

The developer seller, Maxim Cherniavsky — who appeared as the bachelor on the second season of Russia’s version of “The Bachelor,” originally asked $7.495 million for the property that was represented by Josh and Matthew Altman / The Altman Brothers at Douglas Elliman.
