Sam Simon Estate Lists Architecturally Pedigreed Pacific Palisades Compound

SELLER: Estate of Sam Simon
LOCATION: Pacific Palisades, CA
PRICE: $18,000,000

YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: The architecturally pedigreed Pacific Palisades compound of Sam Simon, co-creator of “The Simpsons,” has come up for sale with an asking price of $18 million. Mister Simon, whose pre-Simpsons’ career included producing for the iconic sitcoms “Taxi” and “Cheers,” passed early this year at 59 and the property is being sold by his estate. The proceeds, according to the Wall Street Journal, will be donated to charity.

The two-residence spread, essentially next door to the world-famous Charles and Ray Eames House, spans about 1.5 acres that listing details describe as “park-like.” The larger of the two structures, a somewhat monolithically massed 7,124-square-foot white-walled contemporary, was custom built by Mister Simon to replace a previous home that was damaged in a 2007 fire. According to current listing details, the re-built residence, completed in 2010, contains a quartet of bedrooms; an unknown number of bathrooms — there are a total of nine between the two residences; a double-height entry with a sculptural glass-railed floating staircase and a massive, Medusa-like Dale Chihuly chandelier; a voluminous living room lined with arched windows and doorways; a sleek eat-in kitchen with L-shaped work island; an entertainment lounge/game room with wet bar and home theater; and a roof terrace accessed by a corkscrew staircase that clings vertiginously to the rear façade. The LEED Gold certified residence was purposefully built with a bevy of eco-oriented features that include various energy-saving technologies and all sorts of sustainable, recycled and toxin-free materials. The back of the house, which in this property gossip’s totally meaningless opinion looms a bit too ominously over the much more demure secondary residence, opens through a series of glass sliders and doors to a stone-tiled terrace and sinuous, infinity edge swimming pool.

Set on a flat, grassy pad below the main residence, the low-slung secondary structure was designed in 1948 by all-but-deified modernist architect Richard Neutra as part of the Case Study Program and is known as Bailey House after its original owners. Bailey House was acquired by Mister Simon from his neighbors in 2004 for $3.95 million and subsequently restored and updated by the fine folk at Marmol Radziner for what we can all be assured was a small fortune. Listing photos show the ground hugging structure encompasses two glass-walled pavilions linked by a breezeway. According to the property gossips at The Wall Street Journal, Mister Simon used the newer and larger residence as his home and Bailey House as offices and guest accommodations.

In addition to his Pacific Palisades compound, Mister Simon, married from 1984 to 1991 to girly-voiced 1995 Oscar-nominee and skilled tournament poker player Jennifer Tilly, also maintained a 5.34-acre spread in a gated and celebrity-packed enclave above Malibu’s Point Dume that, despite somewhat vexatious property records, appears to have been purchased by the animal rights activist, boxing manager and tournament poker player in 1995 for $1.4 million. He also previously owned a down-on-her-heels residence in Santa Monica’s Rustic Canyon that was originally designed by Case Study architect Thornton Abell and that property records suggest he bought from Miz Tilly in 1994 and donated in late 2011 to PETA — People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals — who sold the property the following year for $1.65 million.
