Rod McKuen’s BevHills Mansion Offered in Probate Sale

The longtime Beverly Hills estate of famously prolific lyricist, singer and poet Rod McKuen, who died in January at 81, has popped up on the open market as a probate sale with a $15 million pricetag. The wildly successful if often critically panned Mister McKuen — he wrote more than 1,500 songs and penned thousands of easily digestible and arguably schmaltzy poems included in more than two dozen books that sold in the tens of millions of copies — acquired the estate in early 1970 for $290,000.

McKuen’s mansion, set privately at the end of a long if inelegantly blacktopped drive, and described in marketing materials as a “majestic French villa,” was originally built in the late 1920s, and measures in at almost 11,000 square feet, with seven bedrooms and seven bathrooms. A double-height foyer leads to grandly scaled rooms with “beautifully crafted wood details,” per listing details, that include a banquet-accommodating dining room, a paneled second-floor library with separate barroom, and a complete recording studio. The nearly one-acre estate also has a parking-lot-sized motor court, an attached two-bedroom guesthouse and a tree-shaded backyard with lushly planted gardens and swimming pool.
