Now that they’ve re-settled in a celebrity-filled enclave in the Beverly Hills Post Office area — more on that in a minute — showbiz scion and television personality Nicole Richie and Good Charlotte/Madden Brothers rocker Joel Madden have hoisted their quirky mini-compound in L.A.’s fabled Laurel Canyon up for sale on the open market with an asking price of $3,495,000. The (in)famously pencil-thin and sartorially oriented Miz Richie and the copiously tatted Mister Madden acquired the somewhat bizarrely mansard-roofed and shingle-sided hunting cabin meets woodsy contemporary back in May 2009 for $1,912,000.
SELLERS: Nicole Richie and Joel Madden
LOCATION: Los Angeles, CA
SIZE: (approx.) 6,300 square feet, 5 bedrooms, 4 full and 1 half bathrooms
Current listing details show the walled, gated and high-hedged, .4-acre property, just up from frequently traffic-choked Laurel Canyon Boulevard, includes about 6,300 square feet of “Extensively Remodeled” living space with a total of five bedrooms and four full and one half bathroom divided between a main house and a generously-sized pool-side guest house.
Interconnected living spaces in the main residence have pale blond wide-plank wood floors throughout and encompass an ever-so-brief entry vestibule that opens to a voluminous, glass-topped atrium space; a step-down double-height living room with exposed beam ceiling, second floor gallery and fireplace set into full wall of windows; a dining room with exposed beam ceiling and second fireplace set into a full wall of exposed brick. The nearby kitchen is certainly spacious with an over-sized central dining space and expensively decked out with lacquered white, Shaker-style cabinetry and high-grade stainless steel appliances. However, in Your Mama’s humble and utterly meaningless opinion, it’s inconveniently arranged with the appliances and various workspaces placed along the room’s perimeter, about as far apart from each other as possible. The kitchen does, though and agreeably, open directly to a handy-dandy, faux-grassed side terrace with extensive built-in barbecue station and dining area.
A floating stairway under a massive, pyramidical sky-light in the piazza-esque atrium ascends to a walkway that spans the space and links the bedroom wings on the upper floor. At least two of the guest/family bedrooms, one of which has pine-clad walls and a high-vaulted exposed wood ceiling, make use of a pair of subway-tiled bathrooms while the master suite is privately situated in its own wing but somewhat awkwardly accessed via an internal sliding glass door the opens off the upper level gallery that overlooks the main living room. The sky-lit suite has a vaulted, exposed beam wood ceiling, a fitted walk-in closet commensurate in size with Miz Richie’s fashion consciousness, and an also sky-lit bathroom with L-shaped double-sink vanity, jetted tub and an over-sized marble-lined shower stall decked out with multiple shower heads and a built-in bench. Other features of the residence include a large laundry room and completely carpeted office with a whole bunch of nice to have but uninspired looking built-in desks and storage.
Set up the steep hillside behind the house on a tree-ringed plateau, a multi-level paver-tiled terrace surrounds a small, lagoon-style swimming pool with beach entry and spa. The poolside guesthouse includes — as far as this property gossip can tell from a careful perusal of the listing photographs — an over-sized living room with fireplace, a fully-equipped if outdated kitchen with white rental-grade appliances, a bedroom and a Pilates studio/fitness room with lovely wood floors and utterly horrific if understandably practical and easily replaced commercial-style fluorescent lighting.
For the last few years the Richie-Maddens have spent a fair amount of time Down Under where Mister Madden has been for three seasons a judge on the Australian version of “The Voice” but back in the good ol’ United State of America they’ve been on a bit of a real estate tear the last year or so. In June of 2014 they sold Mister Madden’s former bachelor pad — a 4,718-square-foot traditional in Glendale with four bedrooms and four bathrooms — and just a couple of months ago, as Your Mama was the first to tell the children, the couple quietly plunked down $6.7 million for a 5,515-square foot residence in the same celeb-favored enclave in the Beverly Hills Post Office area where many of the other multi-million dollar residences are owned by a bevy of Tinseltown A-listers who include Jennifer Lawrence, Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis, Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban and — probably not coincidentally — the Richie-Maddens newly-wedded brother and sister in law Benji Madden and Cameron Diaz. (In case you didn’t know, Miz Diaz purchased the two-residence compound over the summer of 2010 for $9,447,500 from Candice Bergen.)
