YOUR MAMA’S NOTES: We hear from a long time associate with strong ties to the celebrity real estate whirligig — let’s call her Caren Cracklebush — that much decorated and beaver busy actor and producer Kevin Spacey, the prodigiously talented, famously Delphian and thrice Emmy-nominated and Golden Globe-winning star of the acclaimed Netflix original series “House of Cards,” is looking to cash in on the white-hot high-end property marketplace in Los Angeles. According to ol’ Cracklebush, the two-time Oscar winner (“The Usual Suspects,” “American Beauty”) has quietly allowed a couple of prominent Platinum Triangle real estate brokers to show his long-time residence in L.A.’s affluent Los Feliz ‘hood on the down low for some time now but, so the unconfirmed scuttlebutt goes, he may put the plum property on the open market sometime in the near future with an asking price somewhere quite close to $15 million.
Property records and other online resources show the 1.1 acre spread was purchased via trust in late 1997 for $2.135 million and according to the L.A. County Tax Man the stately and no doubt meticulously maintained residence — a 1920s red brick and faux-timbered English Tudor all but hidden behind electronic gates and a dense wall of shrubbery on a high knoll that provide some pretty impressive views over Los Angeles — comes in at 6,595-square-feet with five bedrooms and four bathrooms. The fully landscaped grounds include a tree-shaded red brick driveway that makes a glamorous sweep up to a generous motor court and parking area. The rear of the angled and double-turreted three-story manse opens to a series of terraces that overlook mature gardens and flat lawns and, on the front side of the house, an alluring oval swimming pool is sunk directly into a plush expanse of lawn discreetly tucked into the tight curl of a tall and thick hedge.
Our research reveals Mister Spacey, again via trust, used to own the vaguely Greek Revival house next door, which he picked up in March 2001 for $1.9 million and sold in May 2006 for $2.535 million. Until early 2010, when property records show it was sold for $3.5 million, Mister Spacey kept a duplex penthouse with wrap around terrace in a 5-unit boutique building on Harrison Street in New York City’s über-expensive TriBeCa neighborhood and we presume without any details or direct knowledge that the veteran star of stage and screen maintains a suitably posh pad in his adopted city of London where he has resided for more than a decade during his long tenure as the artistic director to venerable Old Vic theater, a vaunted post he will leave this fall.
