Stephen Colbert revealed to Jerry Seinfeld on Wednesday’s season finale of “Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee” that he was planning on leaving “The Colbert Report” even before getting his “Late Show” gig.

Colbert had been hosting the “Report” on Comedy Central for nine seasons when he got the coveted CBS job. The final episode of “Report” aired in December.

“I was ready to stop,” Colbert revealed when Seinfeld said he “never seemed tired.” “I was going to stop whether or not — the Letterman thing fell in my lap.”

And unlike David Letterman, whose shoes he’s officially filling at CBS come Sept. 8, Colbert said he’s not interested in getting into any feuds with other latenight hosts. In fact, he and “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon celebrated his new gig over drinks.

“I think nothing would be more boring than a latenight war,” Colbert said.
