Bonnie Hammer, NBCUniversal’s entertainment cable chief, has joined Ebay’s board of directors.

Hammer fills the seat vacated in October by Marc Andreessen. She is one of 10 independent directors on the 12-member board chaired by Ebay founder Pierre Omidyar. The appointment comes as Ebay prepares to separate its PayPal service into a stand-alone publicly traded entity.

“Bonnie has a phenomenal reputation in the industry and brings with her outstanding consumer understanding combined with strong digital and social expertise,” said Ebay prexy-CEO John Donahoe. “We look forward to benefitting from her insight and experience.”

Hammer is a cable biz pioneer who heads NBCUniversal’s largest profit center, a portfolio of 10 cable channels and their digital offshoots as well as the growing Universal Cable Prods. banner. She’s among the highest-ranking women in the entertainment industry.

“I have tremendous admiration for companies with the kind of pioneering spirit and innovation eBay has demonstrated from day one,” Hammer said. “It’s an especially exciting time to join the board as eBay and PayPal move to become two independent, publicly traded entities.”

Hammer also sits on the board of Barry Diller’s IAC.
