Kal Penn has joined the cast of Hulu’s original comedy series “Deadbeat,” slated to premiere on the streaming service next spring.

Penn (“Harold & Kumar” movies, “How I Met Your Mother,” “House”) will star in all 13 episodes of the upcoming season three as a series regular and co-star with Tyler Labine, who plays a hapless medium who goes to any lengths to help New York City’s ghosts settle unfinished business.

Penn is cast as Clyde, a stoner-entrepreneur who becomes Kevin “Pac” Pacalioglu’s (Labine) business partner. The third season of “Deadbeat” is slated to start production in New York on Oct. 19.

The show is produced by Lionsgate Television Group. Cody Heller and Brett Konner (“Wilfred,” “The Inbetweeners”) are co-creators and showrunner Dan Lagana executive produces. Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner and Sarah Esberg from Brad Pitt’s Plan B Entertainment are producers.

As with Hulu’s other originals, the full seasons of “Deadbeat” are available only to subscribers.

Penn, in a detour from his acting career, worked for the Obama Administration as an associate director in the White House’s office of public liaison for a few years to engage with Asian-American and Pacific Islander communities and the arts community.
