Jim Henson Co. Creates Creatures for ‘Oscar’s Hotel’ Series from YouTube Filmmaker PJ Liguori

Fantasy series to launch on Vimeo with cast that includes PewDiePie, Grace Helbig, Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina

Jim Henson Co.’s Creature Shop has pacted with digital studio New Form Digital to fabricate the otherworldly beasts in “Oscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures,” a fantasy series from filmmaker PJ Liguori with a cast of YouTube stars.

The six-episode series, launching exclusively on Vimeo’s on-demand service Sept. 15, will include appearances by top YouTube creators such as PewDiePie (Felix Kjellberg), Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart and Hannah Hart, as well as theps including Patrick Stewart and Alfred Molina.

New Form, in association with Jim Henson Co., is producing “Oscar’s Hotel for Fantastical Creatures.” Series is adapted from a short film by PJ Liguori (a.k.a. KickThePj), selected via a short-film incubator project with 14 YouTubers in late 2014. The studio also has greenlit a series based on Sawyer Hartman’s “Parallax” sci-fi short, launching Sept. 22 on Vimeo.

In “Oscar’s Hotel,” the titular hotel owner suddenly leaves on “unexpected cosmic council business,” leaving his his nephew Oliver as the new proprietor — who embarks on surreal adventures with its eccentric guests. All six episodes will be available to preorder via Vimeo for $9.99.

Digital and traditional talent featured in the series include Chris Kendall, Anna Akana, Mitchell Davis, Jake Roper, Grace Helbig, Mamrie Hart, Hannah Hart, Dan Howell, Phil Lester, Felix Kjellberg (PewDiePie), Marzia Bisognin, Jack Howard, Dean Dobbs, Carrie Fletcher, Meghan Rienks, TomSka, and Andrew Ableson, as well as Patrick Stewart, Alfred Molina and Elliott Gould.

Characters in “Oscar’s Hotel” include the Repossession Fish, voiced by Alfred Molina and Patrick Stewart, and Octochef, played by Mamrie Hart (pictured above).

“PJ Liguori is a very unique storyteller. We’re very proud to work with him and this amazing cast, in partnership with Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, on ‘Oscar’s Hotel,'” said New Form Digital chief creative officer Kathleen Grace.

Added Peter Brooke, creative supervisor of Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, “PJ’s original creatures demonstrated a quirky and irreverent style, so it was a fun challenge to create new characters that would naturally fit and populate ‘Oscar’s Hotel.'”

New Form was created last year by Discovery, Brian Grazer, Ron Howard, Imagine co-chairman Michael Rosenberg, attorney Craig Jacobson, former Tribune Broadcasting president Ed Wilson, former William Morris chief Jim Wiatt and CAA.
