‘Home’ Takes Top Spot on Home Video Charts

'Justice League' direct-to-video movie makes strong Blu-ray Disc debut

DreamWorks Animation’s “Home,” distributed by 20th Century Fox Home Entertainment, easily topped both national home video sales charts for the week ending Aug. 2.

The film, which features the voices of “The Big Bang Theory” star Jim Parsons and singer Rihanna, earned $176.8 million in U.S. theaters and is based on the children’s book about a girl and a cuddly alien who team up to escape an invasion.

The film debuted at No. 1 on both the Nielsen VideoScan First Alert sales chart, which tracks combined DVD and Blu-ray Disc unit sales, and the dedicated Blu-ray sales chart.

“Home” outsold the No. 2 title on the overall disc sales chart, 20th Century Fox’s “The Longest Ride,” by a 12-to-1 margin. “Longest Ride,” a romantic drama with $37.5 million in theatrical earnings, spent the previous two weeks in the top spot.

Warner’s direct-to-video animated superhero movie “Justice League: Gods and Monsters” debuted at No. 3 on the overall disc sales chart (and No. 2 on the dedicated Blu-ray Disc sales chart).

Sony Pictures’ “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2,” which spent its first two weeks of release at No. 2, slipped to No. 4 last week, while the No. 5 spot went to a third new release, Walt Disney Studios’ “The Descendants,” a live-action musical fantasy TV movie from director Kenny Ortega, known for the posthumous Michael Jackson documentary “This Is It” and the “High School Musical” trilogy. The film, which is inspired by the Disney animated classics and tells the story of the offspring of several villains, was viewed an estimated 1.4 million times on the Watch Disney Channel app before its Disney Channel premiere, when it was viewed by 6.6 million people, according to Nielsen, making it the most-watched cable movie of the year.

Of the new releases, “Justice League” fared best on the high-def front, with Blu-ray Disc accounting for 64% of total unit sales. “Home” generated 43% of its first-week sales from Blu-ray, while “Descendants” was only issued on DVD.

On Home Media magazine’s video rental chart for the week, Warner’s “Get Hard” rose to No. 1 now that its 28-day holdback from Redbox is over, bumping “Paul Blart: Mall Cop 2” to No. 2.

“The Gunman,” from Universal Pictures, shot to No. 3 now that its monthlong holdback from Redbox is over, followed at No. 4 by Warner’s “Run All Night” (down from No. 2 the prior week) and, at No. 5, by 20th Century Fox’s “Unfinished Business” (down from No. 3).
