YouTube unveiled a new curated section of verified eyewitness videos called the YouTube Newswire Thursday to give journalists and news junkies alike direct access to newsworthy raw footage from around the world. At launch, YouTube Newswire featured videos about the mass shooting in Charleston, South Carolina, storms in Oklahoma and the war in Syria.
YouTube Newswire is being curated by Storyful, a Dublin, Ireland-based news verification startup that was acquired by News Corp. in 2013. YouTube has been collaborating with Storyful since 2011, and the company has also been verifying social-media eyewitness accounts for Facebook’s curated Newswire feed.
In addition to launching YouTube Newswire, the Google-owned video service also began to work with the First Draft Coalition, a new group of news verification experts looking to develop guidelines and tools to verify videos, photos and tweets from eyewitnesses to news events.
