Baz Luhrmann’s Netflix Drama Casts Female Lead

Singer-songwriter Herizen Guardiola will make her acting debut as the female lead in “The Get Down,” Baz Luhrmann’s upcoming Netflix drama about teens coming of age in 1970s New York.

Guardiola will play Mylene Cruz, described as a “shining, tenacious girl with a voice from God who dreams of disco stardom from the confines of her family’s fiercely religious church walls.” She joins fellow newcomers Justice Smith, Shameik Moore, Skylan Brooks and Tremaine Brown Jr. in a story about teenagers struggling to survive in the Bronx while armed only with verbal games, improvised dance steps, some magic markers and spray cans.

“So many really talented actors were seen to play the lead female role of Mylene Cruz, daughter of Reverend Ramon Cruz and niece of Papa Filipe Fuerte Cruz in ‘The Get Down,'” said Luhrmann. “It’s always thrilling to find a fresh unknown talent, particularly one who is not only a terrific actor but a magnificent vocalist. The entire ‘The Get Down’ team welcome Herizen Guardiola into our story.”

Luhrmann will direct the first two episodes and the season finale and serve as executive producer. The series is also exec produced by Catherine Martin, Paul Watters, Thomas Kelly, Stephen Adly Guirgis, Shawn Ryan and Marney Hochman.

The 13-episode music-driven drama from Sony Pictures Television will debut in all Netflix territories in 2016.

    Review: 'O.G.' on HBO

Jeffrey Wright, the most compelling reason to watch HBO’s new film “O.G.,” is among television’s best actors at switching between codes or manners of being. On “Westworld,” his timeline-toggling android swaps personae so delicately that his performance gains in resonance when recalled in retrospect. (Perhaps that’s why Wright has been so oddly underrated through the [...]
