Facebook reached one in seven people on Earth in a single day earlier this week: Over a billion people accessed Facebook this past Monday, according to CEO Mark Zuckerberg, who announced the milestone Thursday — where else — on Facebook.
“When we talk about our financials, we use average numbers, but this is different. This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it’s just the beginning of connecting the whole world,” Zuckerberg said.
On average, Facebook has 968 million daily active users, according to the company’s most recent data. Every month, 1.49 billion people access Facebook through its website and mobile apps.
Notable is that the vast majority of these users now accesses Facebook via their mobile phones: Facebook had on average 844 million daily active mobile users in June.
The drive towards mobile initially represented a challenge for Facebook, which for some time wasn’t able to monetize mobile as effectively as desktop usage. But in its most recent quarter, Facebook generated 72% of its ad revenue with mobile platforms.
