2015 Cannes Film Market Ups Ante on New Digital Forum NEXT

Think-tank/promotion initiative expands floor space, panels, workshops in second edition as digital film companies, markets grow

The world’s biggest film market, the Cannes Film Market is dramatically upping the ante on its new digital revolution film forum Next, in response to market demand.

Launched last year, the Cannes Film Market’s — and Cannes Festival’s — first-ever extended networking, think-tank and training initiative runs May 13-22.

For its second edition, the Next Pavilion will be three times the size of last year’s in order to cater to more participants and more expected exhibitors.

Focusing on new or alternative business models for film, Next panels will take place during mornings in one of the screening rooms at the Palais des Festivals with a capacity of 150 persons vs. 75 last year.

The number of panels will also be increased from four to 14 in 2015, running twice a day. Workshops will be doubled to 14. The panel program for this year will focus on new opportunities arising in digital innovation, whether in storytelling, financing, production, distribution, marketing, theatrical exhibition or festivals.

The Next Pavilion will host innovative companies, creative platforms, new initiatives and experts in digital revolution to exchange and brainstorm around new challenges ahead. All will be located under one roof, at the Village International, the Cannes Marché du Film – the Cannes Film Market – announced Wednesday.

With globalization, Next addresses one of the two big sea changes currently rocking the film industry.

“Two-thousand fourteen was an experiment. The results confirmed that the film industry feels there is really large need for such an event and saw it as an added value for the Cannes Film Market and Festival. Companies are now able to do their business but also have access a space for discussions and the exchange of ideas,” said Jerome Paillard, Cannes Marché du Film director.

Also, Next gives digital companies, including startups, the opportunity to test and expand their business with producers and distributors and visibility via networking at the event and its media coverage, added Clara Massot, Next project manager.

Next is one of a brace of new initiatives at Cannes Marché du Film initiatives. Also launched last year, the Cannes Film Market Mixers — speed networking events structured by region, sector of film type — will focus this time around on Europe Meets Latin America, Encounter Festival Programmers and the genre-centered Fantastic Mixer, a repeat from the popular 2014 inaugural Mixer.
