AT&T Taps Former Sirius XM, Cisco Exec as Video and Internet CTO

Enrique Rodriguez joins telco after former DirecTV CTO Rômulo Pontual exits

AT&T has hired Enrique Rodriguez as executive VP and chief technical officer for its Entertainment and Internet business, a role that spans both AT&T’s U-verse service as well as DirecTV, and any product that the company may develop to supersede either of those services.

In a related move, former DirecTV CTO Rômulo Pontual left the company after AT&T completed the $49 billion acquisition of the satcaster in July, Variety has learned.

Rodriguez until recently worked for satellite-radio provider Sirius XM as EVP of products, operations and connected vehicle. Before that, he worked for Cisco Systems, overseeing the company’s service provider business after heading Microsoft’s TV business.

At AT&T, Rodriguez will have to figure out how the company is going to eventually merge the U-verse TV and DirecTV pay-TV subscription business. AT&T has taken some initial steps to cross-market the companies’ products since the FCC approved the merger, offering consumers bundles that combine AT&T’s wireless service and DirecTV service.

AT&T announced last week that it selected Ericsson to further integrate both services, but hasn’t yet laid out how it plans to eventually bring them together. AT&T currently has close to 6 million U-verse TV subscribers, whereas DirecTV has about 20 million in the U.S.

An AT&T rep confirmed Rodriguez’s appointment as well as Pontual’s departure.
