Survivor Objects to Use of ‘Eye of the Tiger’ at Rally for Kentucky Clerk Kim Davis

Survivor, the group behind the 1980s hit “Eye of the Tiger,” is objecting to the use of the song at a rally for Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, who was released on Tuesday after serving jail time for refusing to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

Davis appeared on stage at a rally with presidential candidate Mike Huckabee, with the Survivor song adding extra theatricality to the event.

But the song’s co-author, Frankie Sullivan, posted a message on the group’s Facebook page saying that it was used without their permission.

“NO! We did not grant Kim Davis any rights to use ‘My Tune -The Eye Of The Tiger.’

“I would not grant her the rights to use Charmin! C’mom Mike, you are not The Donald but you can do better than that –

“See Ya really SoooooooonnnnnnN!!!!!!”

Neil Young objected to Donald Trump’s use of “Rockin in the Free World” at his presidential campaign announcement in June, and Young’s manager noted that he was supporting Bernie Sanders for president. Trump’s campaign said that they had obtained a license through ASCAP.

It’s unclear if the organizers of the Davis rally obtained a license. Sullivan filed suit against Newt Gingrich’s presidential campaign in 2012. The case was settled in September of that year.

“Eye of the Tiger” became a big hit when it was featured in the soundtrack of “Rocky III” in 1982.

A message to Liberty Counsel, which is representing Davis, was not immediately returned.
