The news follows intense media speculation that the couple, officially known as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, would name their second child after William’s mother, Princess Diana.
When asked about the couple’s choice of name, a spokesperson said: “We’ll let the names speak for themselves.”
Charlotte is the feminine form of Charles, which is the name of William’s father. Elizabeth is the name of William’s grandmother, the British monarch.
The baby was born on Saturday at St. Mary’s Hospital in London.
