Mip TV: Fremantle Pacts With Shanghai Media For Future Formats

FremantleMedia and partners Shanghai Media Group and China Media Capital have set up a joint venture to create and develop entertainment formats for the Chinese market.

The exclusive deal involves SMG’s BesTV unit, and shows developed will air first on its BesTV and Dragon TV channels.

The deal also potentially sees SMG-developed content represented in global markets by FremantleMedia.

FremantleMedia has previously licensed around 20 titles, including “Got Talent,” “Idols” and “The X Factor,” “Don’t Stop Me Now,” “Take Me Out,” “Hole in the Wall” and “Family Feud” to broadcasters in China.

“China’s TV sector is undergoing the most exciting transformation, and the value of premium content is being created and manifested with unprecedented enthusiasm,” said Li Ruigang, founding chairman of CMC.

“The Chinese television market is rapidly becoming one of the most important in the world. This new relationship with BesTV, SMG and CMC allows FremantleMedia to build on its existing presence in China and strengthen our ties in this territory,” said Cecile Frot-Coutaz, global CEO of FremantleMedia, in a prepared statement.
