“Pickle and Peanut” sounds like savory edible fare, but it’s also the name of a new comically twisted animated series on Disney XD whose main characters are, well, a pickle and a peanut — and teenagers to boot.
Creator Noah Z. Jones worked with developer Joel Trussell to define this world. They reviewed photos from the ’70s, and dredged up memories of their own teenage years.
In the toon, “Pickle and Peanut” are like photorealistic cutouts that pop against a hand-drawn backdrop.
Aiming to blend photo collages and found objects, Jones turned to Phil Voze, who had worked as a background artist on Disney Channel’s “Fish Hooks.” Prior to creating action elements, Jones and Trussell carefully review storyboards, marking effective points for a visual punch. They present notes to Joel Fox, who builds the objects. “Joel throws together creative things on a shoestring budget,” Jones says.
Adds Trussell: “It’s lo-fi, not polished at all. It should feel like these guys are sitting around, building sets for a movie.”
