NBC News Special Correspondent Tom Brokaw has announced that he is battling cancer.

The veteran journalist, who has been with NBC News since 1966, was diagnosed in August with multiple myeloma.

“With the exceptional support of my family, medical team and friends, I am very optimistic about the future and look forward to continuing my life, my work and adventures still to come,” he said in a statement. “I remain the luckiest guy I know. I am very grateful for the interest in my condition but I also hope everyone understands I wish to keep this a private matter.”

Brokaw has continued to work throughout his treatment, making appearances on programs like “Nightly News with Brian Williams” and contributing to NBC News’ Winter Olympics coverage. He also guest starred on the finale of Amazon Studios’ political comedy, “Alpha House.”

NBC News did not respond to requests for comment.
