France’s Autour de Minuit Garners Solid Buzz With ‘Caribou’

TOULOUSE, France– Arthouse shingle Autour de Minuit, which produced the Oscar-winning toon short “Logorama,” garnered upbeat reactions after pitching “Jean Michel Super Caribou” at Cartoon Forum, the three-day animation mart.

“Caribou” – comprising 52 episodes of 11 minutes — is based on Magali Le Huche’s  eponymous popular children novel and turns on a superhero caribou who watches over his city and protects other animals.

Autour de Minuit is producing the series with Luxembourg’s Melusine and Belgium’s Panique. All three companies last teamed on “Le Yark,” a singular animated feature based on a classic novel about a monster that can only feed on well-behaved children. “Like ‘Le Yark,’ ‘Caribou’ is auteur-driven,” said Nicolas Schmerkin, Autour de Minuit’s boss.

Schmerkin pitched the show today at Cartoon Forum and is already in discussions with major broadcasters, notably Turner, Cartoon Network, Disney as well as TF1 and Canal Plus.  Schmerkin is also looking for a sales company and is in talks with Mediatoon, Cake Entertainment and Superights.

Gaul’s pubcaster France Televisions, which previously bought Autour de Minuit’s 10-minute short on “Caribou,” is in advanced negotiations to buy first-window rights to the series.

Autour de Minuit is using Blender, a free and open-source 3D computer graphics software, to create “Caribou.”

Cartoon Forum wraps Sept. 26.
