Variety is bolstering its television coverage with the appointment of Debra Birnbaum as executive editor, television.
Birnbaum, an experienced magazine editor with deep knowledge of the television industry, will oversee all TV features for Variety’s print editions. She’ll work closely with Editors-in-Chief Claudia Eller, Cynthia Littleton and Andrew Wallenstein and Executive Editor Steven Gaydos in planning and executing in-depth editorial packages, news, analysis and trend features for Variety’s range of print publications, and she will contribute to Variety.com.
Birnbaum came to Variety in April to help spearhead the eight Extra Edition special issues published this month in conjunction with Emmy season. She will be at the helm of Variety’s expansive TV awards season coverage leading up to the July 10 nominations announcement through the 66th annual Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony on Aug. 25.
“Debra hit the ground running from the day she entered our newsroom. She has a keen understanding of the television arena and strong relationships throughout the industry. We are delighted to add such a seasoned pro to our formidable editorial team,” said Editors-in-Chief Eller, Littleton and Wallenstein.
Birnbaum spent the past seven years with TV Guide Magazine, where she held the position of President/Editor-in-Chief. She revitalized the classic brand with innovations like the annual “Fan Favorites” cover contest, the Comic-Con photo studio, and the “Hot List” franchise and party. She appears frequently on TV as an entertainment expert, and regularly moderates panels for the TV Academy, Screen Actors Guild and the Paley Center for Media. She has also worked for Redbook, George, More, the New York Post and Us Weekly, among other outlets.
