CW Series Orders Include Rob Thomas’ ‘iZombie,’ ‘Arrow’ Spinoff ‘The Flash’

The CW has given the go to four new series for its fall lineup, including “iZombie” penned by “Veronica Mars'” Rob Thomas and Diane Ruggiero, and “The Flash,” the superhero origin story that has already been teased in sister show “Arrow.”

Thomas and Ruggiero are executive producing “iZombie,” which is about a med student-turned-zombie forced to work in a coroner’s office, with Warner Bros. TV’s Danielle Stokdyk and Dan Etheridge. The show is based on the characters created by Chris Roberson and Michael Allred and published by DC Comics’ Vertigo imprint.

The Flash” is executive produced by Greg Berlanti, Andrew Kreisberg and Geoff Johns, who penned the pilot, in association with WBTV and DC Entertainment and is based on characters published by DC Comics.

Other series orders include those for “Jane the Virgin” and “The Messengers.”

The first is scribe and executive producer Jennie Snyder Urman’s adaptation of a Venezuelan telenovela about a girl who is accidentally artificially inseminated. CBS Television Studios will executive produce in association with Ben Silverman and Gary Pearl of Electus and Jorge Granier.

The Messengers,” which is penned by “Teen Wolf’s” Eoghan O’Donnell and executive produced by “The Good Wife’s” Ted Humphrey and Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk for CBS TV, is a post-apocalyptic drama that follows a group of strangers who die from an energy pulse after a mysterious object crashes to Earth — only to reawaken to learn that they may have saved the planet.

The CW also announced Thursday that it is renewing the post-nuclear war drama “The 100,” the Rachel Bilson-starrer “Hart of Dixie” and the sci-fi romance series “Beauty and the Beast.” Dramas “Reign,” “The Vampire Diaries,” “The Originals,” “Arrow” and “Supernatural” had previously been given renewals, while the network has pulled the plug on “Carrie Diaries,” “The Tomorrow People” and “Star-Crossed.”
