ABC Family has given the greenlight to season two of scripted drama “Chasing Life,” the network announced on Thursday.

The series stars Italia Ricci as a 24-year-old journalist who learns she has leukemia, and is based on a Televisa Spanish-language series. The exact season two episode count has not yet been revealed.

Season one of the drama ended three months ago on the youth-skewing network, though a Christmas special will air on Dec. 9. The freshman season contained 21 episodes, including the Christmas special.

“Chasing Life” is produced by BV Family Productions, Lionsgate, Televisa and ABC Family. Executive producers include Susanna Fogel, Sean Smith, Aaron Kaplan and Joni Lefkowitz.

ABC Family recently named Karey Burke exec VP of programming and development, and the renewal marks one of her first decisions for the cabler. Other scripted shows on ABC Family include “Baby Daddy,” “Stitchers,” “The Fosters,” “Melissa & Joey,” “Young & Hungry” and “Switched at Birth.”
