A new take on the term “space race”: ABC has granted a 10-episode series order to “Gossip Girl” co-creator Stephanie Savage’s pilot about the spouses who stood beside the American astronauts exploring the final frontier.

The period drama, which is based on Lily Koppel’s novel, will bow this summer. Savage, Josh Schwartz and Len Goldstein will exec produce through their ABC Studios-based Fake Empire, along with Michael London of Groundswell. Janice Williams brought the project to Groundswell.

ABC’s other recent deals include a series pickup of untitled David O. Russell and Susannah Grant’s upstairs-downstairs soap set at a country club. Keep track of pilot season news with Variety‘s TV pilots and development scorecard.
