“Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” actor J. August Richards is switching from superheroes to politics in his quest to save the world in his new role on Lifetime’s new scripted series, “The Lottery.”

Richards has been cast in a multi-episode arc as deputy secretary of state Nathan Mitchell on the post-apocalyptic drama set in a world where women have stopped having children and a “lottery” is held to determine the surrogates for 100 fertilized embryos. His character is tasked by the president to travel overseas as a foreign diplomat once the lottery is announced.

The series, starring Marley Shelton, is produced by Warner Horizon Television for Lifetime and is slated to premiere July 20.

Richards, who will continue his recurring role on ABC’s “SHIELD,” has also begun filming his recurring role on Bravo’s “Girlfriends Guide to Divorce.”

He is repped by APA and Greenlight management.
