“Hairspray’s” Adam Shankman is set to direct and executive produce HBO Films’ “Madame Rose,” a biopic based on stage mother Rose Hovick.

Penned by Tristine Skyler, “Madame Rose” is based on the story of Hovick, a determined mind who would do anything to advance the careers of her daughters, burlesque performer Gypsy Rose Lee and actress June Havoc.

Her story was brought to life in the musical “Gypsy: A Musical Fable,” which was based on the memoirs of Hovick’s daughter Lee.

In that version, Hovick has been played by Ethel Merman, Angela Lansbury, Rosalind Russell, Tyne Daly, Bernadette Peters, Patti LuPone, Betty Buckley and Bette Midler.

Shankman and Jennifer Gibgot are executive producing via their company Offspring Entertainment. The two are both repped by UTA and Bloom Hergott, and are currently in preproduction on New Line’s “Mean Moms.”

Skyler is repped by CAA and Echo Lake Management.

Variety sister site Deadline Hollywood broke the news of Shankman’s involvement earlier.
