CANNES– BBC Worldwide is joining forces with Fabrice Larue’s Paris-based media group Newen to produce the Gallic makeover of “Last Tango in Halifax,” the hit BBC One romantic comedy series.

The U.K. drama, created by Sally Wainwright and produced by RED, has been commissioned for a third season.

“This deal with a prestigious broadcaster and distributor like BBC fits into Newen’s strategy to team with big European groups to create, adapt and produce quality programs that broadcasters now look for,” said Tanguy de Franclieu, managing director of Newen’s international division.

Caroline Lassa, producer at Newen-owned Telfrance, whose credits include French detective series “Candice Renoir,” will head the development of “Last Tango in Halifax'”s French redo.

“Last Tango in Hallifax” is a second-chance romantic drama toplining Derek Jacobi and Anne Reid as a couple of widowed septuagenarians and former high school sweethearts who get reunited via a social network.
