LONDON — International TV production group Argonon has bought U.K. specialist factual shingle Windfall Films with an eye to driving growth in the U.S. and Canada.
David Dugan, CEO and co-founder of Windfall, joins the board of Argonon, and takes a stake in the group, along with fellow directors Ian Duncan, Carlo Massarella and Kristina Obradovic.
Windfall produces factual shows, across the fields of history, military, adventure, science and natural history, for channels on both sides of the Atlantic, with several shows broadcasting as live cross-platform events. Windfall has extensive co-production expertise, working with broadcast partners in the U.K., U.S. and Canada.
It is one of the leading producers of science and technology programs in the UK. Its slate, includes BAFTA-winning “Inside Nature’s Giants” (Channel 4) and Emmy award-winning “DNA” (Channel 4).
It has produced many landmark history documentaries, including “D-Day As It Happens,” “Dambusters: Building The Bouncing Bomb” and “Escape From Colditz.”
The company has been a pioneer in multi-platform ventures, including “Foxes Live: Wild in the City” and “The Operation: Surgery Live.”
Observational documentaries include “You’re Not Splitting Up My Family.” It has also pioneered a new hybrid form of factually-based drama, such as “Richard Is My Boyfriend,” which combined actors with professionals playing themselves, with a real judge deciding whether a woman with learning difficulties should be sterilized.
International successes include “Big Bigger Biggest” (National Geographic), “Strip the City” (Discovery Channel), “Animal Superpowers” (National Geographic) and “Generals at War” (National Geographic).
