Pope Francis Screens In 3D At Rome Film Festival

ROME – Pope Francis is screening in 3D at the Rome Film Festival where Rupert Murdoch’s Sky Italia paybox and the Vatican TV Center (CTV) world-preemed 3D docu “Canonization 2014: An Historic Event” and also announced that the pontiff’s upcoming Christmas Eve mass will be getting the 3D TV treatment.

“Canonization 2014: An Historic Event” depicts the April 27 ceremony in St. Peter’s Square when two of Pope Francis’ predecessors, John Paul II and John XXIII, where canonised as saints in front of hundreds of thousands of attending pilgrims.

The unprecedented double canonisation event was aired live in 3D via Sky in Italy, Germany, and the U.K., and beamed for free in 1,000 movie theatres around the world via Nexo Digital.

The 3D canonisation event docu also explores rarely seen parts of there Vatican, including its secret archive, and retraces the first year of Pope Francis’ papacy.

Interestingly, the docu also comprises comments by Nobel-winning Italian playwright and actor Dario Fo, a known atheist and Marxist who praises Pope Francis. The main narrator is Italian A-list actor Giancarlo Giannini. It is being sold internationally by Electric Sky.

At the Rome press launch Vatican TV Center chief Monsignor Dario Vigano and Sky 3D topper Cosetta Lagani said their 3D collaboration will continue with Pope Francis’ upcoming Christmas Eve mass, which will be beamed in 3D in Italy, and possibly other countries, on Sky. Easter Mass is also likely to get the VCT/Sky 3D TV treatment. The docu, which bowed Thursday at the fest, will have its TV preem today (Friday October 17) on Sky 3D in Italy.

Vigano underlined how 3D can give the world’s faithful a “fully immersive” experience of papal events when they are unable to attend them in person.

The fact that CTV has teamed up with Sky on the 3D TV project, rather than pubcaster RAI, which had until recently been the Vatican’s customary TV partner in Italy, marks a major coup for Sky Italia.

With the April 27 canonisation ceremony Pope Francis became the first pontiff to be seen globally on TV in 3D.

The Rome Film Festival, which opened October 16, runs through October 25.
