Vanessa Hudgens, Rosario Dawson Kiss and Make Up on Set of ‘Gimme Shelter’

A plucky indie that wrapped in 2011 finally got the star treatment at a special screening at New York’s Museum of Modern Art on Jan. 22. Ron Krauss’ “Gimme Shelter,” starring Vanessa Hudgens, Rosario Dawson, James Earl Jones and Brendan Fraser, is based on the true experiences of young homeless women in New Jersey’s Several Sources Shelters. The film screened to a packed room of talent, eager fans and  residents of the shelter.

Lead actress Hudgens lived at Several Sources Shelters on and off for four weeks while preparing for her role. “I spent as much time as I could with the girls,” gushed Hudgens, “and slowly tried to ease my way into their lives because I didn’t want to be too intrusive.”

Hudgens also bonded with co-star Rosario Dawson in spite of a strained relationship on screen.

“On the plane to [Cannes] my manager shows me the opening scene of the film: ‘You play her mom and attack her,’” revealed Rosario Dawson, who plays Hudgens’ abusive mother. “As soon as we got off the plane we had this totally glamorous experience at Cannes, and then a couple months later I’m attacking her in a motel in New Jersey. It was so good that we had that familiarity with each other.”

“Me and Rosario are genuinely big kids having fun,” Hudgens added. “We’re both pretty strong women, so we got through it all right.”

After the screening, guests convened at a Cinema Society-hosted party at Harlow on 56th Street. Also in attendance were Taryn Manning, Tony Danza and designer Olivier Theyskens.
