Jennifer Aniston, Will Forte Talk Chemistry for ‘Life of Crime’s’ Dark Caper Roles

After six years of bringing together the Elmore Leonard novel-turned-indie film, the cast and crew of “Life of Crime” arrived Wednesday night for its West Coast premiere at the ArcLight Hollywood.

Stars Jennifer Aniston and Will Forte displayed a strong sense of friendship on the carpet. Both largely known for their comedy, the pair tried out a new genre with “Life of Crime.”

“We had a ball together,” Aniston said. “We had some great rehearsals, great dinners and fun times.”

“Yeah, we broke it down,” Forte added.

“We broke some stuff down and then we laid it all down on some film,” the actress chuckled.

Will Forte, who was sporting a large beard, said the film utilizes a mixture of comedy, crime and love. “It’s a little bit of everything. It’s hard to put this movie in a box. It’s very much in the Elmore Leonard tone,” he said.

The film, set in the late 1970s, tells the story of a two low-end criminals who plot to kidnap a Detroit billionaire’s wife for ransom. Aniston is the wife and Forte plays an admirer of hers. The film was dedicated to Leonard.

Director Daniel Schechter noted how versatile the cast was, especially Aniston to her role as a vulnerable trophy wife.

“Someone suggested Jennifer for the role. I didn’t even have the foresight to dream that big,” Schechter said. “It seemed like she wanted to change it up, that she wanted to do something different. She was always game to try out new things.”

Other cast members noted the cast’s strong camaraderie as well. John Hawkes said that the chemistry among the actors was a huge factor to bringing the film together.

“It always starts with the story and the script and then you try to find really good people to work with,” Hawkes said. “So when those three things work together I’m in.”

The film was adapted from the late Leonard’s novel called “The Switch.” Leonard, who passed away in 2013 shortly before the film’s completion, was on everyone’s mind during the red carpet. Several people noted the genius behind the writer’s work.

“It was a blast to do, and you realize how brilliant a writer is when you make their book into a film,” Schechter said. “His work was just so good the more you studied it and picked it apart.”

Leonard lived to see “Life of Crime” accepted for the Toronto International Film Festival in 2013, according to Schechter.

Cast and attendees gathered at the recently-opened Argyle for the afterparty. Meanwhile, Aniston made an appearance on “Jimmy Kimmel Live” with some special “Friends.”

Lionsgate and Roadside Attractions release “Life of Crime” in theaters and VOD on Aug. 29.
