Every year, Michael Epstein, executive producer of the Nautica Triathlon in Malibu lures an ensemble of celebrities for a morning of serious exercise. For participants, including Jon Cryer, Rob Riggle and Victor Ortiz, the reasons for running range from competitive to personal. Count “Royal Pains” actor Mark Feuerstein in the latter category. He said he participated in last year’s race, which raised more than $1 million for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, because the hospital “saved our daughter Addie’s life when she was 5 months old and diagnosed with a heart defect.” He will participate again this year.

Epstein said the Sept. 13 and 14 event, which consists of a half-mile swim in the Pacific Ocean, an 18-mile bike ride and a four-mile run on Zuma Beach, is extremely spectator-friendly. “I wanted to expose as many people as possible to health and fitness,” he explained. “And I thought it was probably the most beautiful spot in the world to host a triathlon.”
