Ed Asner and Laraine Newman will be among the Hollywood talent joining young actors onstage for “A Mid-City’s Night’s Dream,” a spin on Shakespeare’s well-known comedy, Nov. 9 at Studio 11 in Los Angeles. The play is the annual fundraising gala for the Los Angeles Drama Club.
For 10 years, LADC — with the help of sponsor Showtime Networks — has produced Shakespeare plays with kids cast in the main roles, including several young thesps from underserved communities.
Industry figures such as “Mad Men” creator Matthew Weiner have gravitated toward the org. Weiner notes the professionalism of the productions, and the vital role the LADC has played in the lives of his four sons. “It’s social, intellectual, and it gives them a lot of self-esteem to pull it off,” he said. “The enthusiasm is contagious.”
