AFI Fest: Steve Carell on His ‘Sexy’ Variety Cover and ‘Foxcatcher’s’ International Appeal

With Channing Tatum and Mark Ruffalo absent from the AFI Fest closing night screening of “Foxcatcher” Thursday, the press were left to crib and quibble over quotes from Steve Carell, whose turn as multi-millionaire murderer John du Pont is garnering mega Oscar buzz.

Carell had this to say about his Nov. 11 cover of Variety: “Look at that, oh man. You know what I gotta say: sexy is the only word that comes to mind.”

Andreas Laszlo Konrath for Variety

The one-time “Daily Show” correspondent said he didn’t have anything to prove when he took the part of the slow-burning du Pont.

“I don’t approach parts that way. It’s not my concern how other people perceive of me and its not up to me to change perception. That’s not how I have ever conducted my career. I took it because the script was great. I wanted to work with Bennett and it was an incredibly intriguing story,” Carell said.

Atop the film’s movie poster sits a quote from Variety chief film critic Scott Foundas proclaiming the movie to be “a great movie that takes America as its very subject” and Carell, who has screened the movie at several festivals internationally including Cannes, would agree.

“It’s interesting to see international audiences reflect on it as just that: a movie about America. But I kind of think it’s both,” he said.

And what about the prosthetic nose Carell wears throughout the film?

“I didn’t think twice about it.”

Also in attendance were director Bennett Miller, Anthony Michael Hall, Sony Pictures Classics’ Michael Barker and Tom Bernard, producers Megan Ellison, Chelsea Barnard and Jon Kilik. Sony Pictures Classics opens “Foxcatcher” Nov. 14 in Los Angeles and New York.
