Red Is the New Black on the Golden Globe Awards Red Carpet (PHOTOS)

Red became the new black Sunday night at the 71st annual Golden Globe Awards.

“12 Years a Slave” actress Lupita Nyong’o stunned in a red-caped Ralph Lauren frock (and reminded this reporter of Jennifer Lawrence‘s grand entrance in a Calvin Klein Collection dress at the 2011 Academy Awards) while “Nurse Jackie”s Edie Falco opted for a bowed Lanvin. Amy Adams, fresh off “American Hustle,” decided to continue the 1970s theme with a plunging neckline Valentino ensemble. “Veep” and “Enough Said” double nominee Julia Louis-Dreyfus opted for a fire-red Narciso Rodriguez frock while Taylor Swift rounded out the red-dressed ladies in a black and red Carolina Herrera gown.

So much for conflicting with the carpet, but better that than competing with one another, perhaps.

It was a canary yellow face-off between Lena Dunham, star and creator of “Girls,” and “The Big Bang Theory” actress Melissa Rauch, both of whom opted for floor-length gowns from Zac Posen and Romona Keveza, respectively.

It was also a who-wore-it-best showdown between “House of Cards” winner Robin Wright and Naomi Watts, both of whom donned gold halter-neck dresses (from Reem Acra and Tom Ford, respectively), and likewise between “Downton Abbey’s” Laura Carmichael (in Viktor and Rolf) and “Nashville” star Hayden Panettiere (in Tom Ford), in heavy competition for best black and white ensemble. Although, when it comes to monochrome, who can really beat Gwyneth Paltrow in Tom Ford at the 2012 Oscars?

While the dress may steal the show, the suit defines the designer.

Leonardo DiCaprio may have missed the mark in an ill-fitting notch-lapel tuxedo from Giorgio Armani, although his bowtie was spot on (as it always is). Meanwhile Tom Hanks looked to Tom Ford, a designer he made sure to point out was American.

Velvet was the fabric of choice for “Thor” star Chris Hemsworth and “House of Cards” lead Kevin Spacey. “Dallas Buyers Club” actor Matthew McConaughey went for his staple Dolce and Gabbana — granted in green velvet — while “Modern Family’s” Ty Burrell opted for a Giorgio Armani velvet shawl-collar tux.
