Robert L Daniels, who was a theater critic at Variety and Daily Variety for some 20 years, died in Chatham, N.J., on February 26. He was 81.

His enchantment with the theater led to a career as a critic penning thousands of reviews for community, Broadway, and New York cabaret productions. Daniels, pictured above with Tony Bennett, directed and acted in plays at community theaters and also authored the book “Laurence Olivier: Theater and Cinema.”

Daniels served in the U.S. Army as a corporal overseeing entertainment for the troops and worked for many years in record stores.

He is survived by two sons and a daughter; two brothers; 10 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
