The stage adaptation of the epic historical romance, based on the 1957 Boris Pasternak novel that was also made into a 1965 film, initially bowed at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006 before a reworked version played a run in Sydney in 2011. Des McAnuff (“Jersey Boys”), the former a.d. of La Jolla, directed the two prior incarnations and will also helm the new one.
The show — with book by Michael Weller (“Moonchildren”), music by Lucy Simon (“The Secret Garden”) and lyrics by Michael Korie (“Grey Gardens”) and Amy Powers — moves into the Broadway Theater following the exit of “Cinderella,” which will close there at the end of the year.
Anita Waxman leads a producing team that also includes Tom Dokton, Latitude Link, Ted Hartley/RKO Stage and Chunsoo Shin, with Joe Corcoran, J. Todd Harris, the Pelican Group and John Frost. Junkyard Dog (“Memphis”) is on board as exec producer.
“Doctor Zhivago” starts previews March 27 prior to an April 21 opening.
