‘Doctor Zhivago’ Musical Aims to Sweep Broadway Off Its Feet

The long-aborning musical “Doctor Zhivago” has locked in its Broadway home at last, with producers booking an April opening at the Broadway Theater.

The stage adaptation of the epic historical romance, based on the 1957 Boris Pasternak novel that was also made into a 1965 film, initially bowed at the La Jolla Playhouse in 2006 before a reworked version played a run in Sydney in 2011. Des McAnuff (“Jersey Boys”), the former a.d. of La Jolla, directed the two prior incarnations and will also helm the new one.

The show — with book by Michael Weller (“Moonchildren”), music by Lucy Simon (“The Secret Garden”) and lyrics by Michael Korie (“Grey Gardens”) and Amy Powers — moves into the Broadway Theater following the exit of “Cinderella,” which will close there at the end of the year.

Anita Waxman leads a producing team that also includes Tom Dokton, Latitude Link, Ted Hartley/RKO Stage and Chunsoo Shin, with Joe Corcoran, J. Todd Harris, the Pelican Group and John Frost. Junkyard Dog (“Memphis”) is on board as exec producer.

Doctor Zhivago” starts previews March 27 prior to an April 21 opening.

Critic’s Notebook: The Night Before Broadway Went Dark

Let me preface this by saying the story I’m about to tell is not the smartest thing I’ve ever done. Two weeks ago, I rushed to New York City to catch “The Inheritance” before it closed on Broadway. I’d been tracking the play by Matthew Lopez — a multigenerational, six-and-a-half-hour monument that resurrects E.M. Forster [...]
